Officer rocks Nam Secretariat over non-payment of benefits

Grace Thipa

Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) operations have been grounded after fired administration officer Grace Thipa confiscated the association’s office keys for non-payment of her terminal benefits.

Nam opened its own office in Blantyre after the association and other sport bodies were vacated from Malawi National Council of Sports building three years ago.

Thipa confirmed she had confiscated Nam secretariat door keys to push for her terminal benefits, having worked for eight years.

“This is the more reason I will not hand over the office keys. I just need my benefits. I have made several correspondences to the general secretary and also talked with the president [Khungekile Matiya] who only apologised,” she said.

Matiya said her office made arrangements to pay Thipa her benefits.

“I gave direction to the general secretary and the treasurer to ensure that Nam pays her benefits and all outstanding issues,” she said.

Nam Treasurer Jane Kachali-Saidi admitted that that the body owes Thipa her benefits, which will be paid soon.

“We consulted someone to help us with calculations on how much we owe her and the process is over. I believe within a week she will be paid. She must also understand that it does not take a day to complete that process but we will surely pay her,” she said.
