Old Mutual Malawi has committed to continue sponsoring the Mathematics Olympiad Competition. The company has since announced an increase in its sponsorship towards the competition from the current K8.5 million to K10 million.
Old Mutual Acting Chief Executive Officer, Edith Jiya, unveiled the new sponsorship during a presentation of the 2016/17 sponsorship fund to Mzuzu University held at Old Mutual head office in Blantyre.
According to Jiya, through the funding, Old Mutual is targeting to grow the knowledge base of young people in disciplines such as financial services and science.
“Old Mutual Malawi continuously shows its commitment to the community through this Mathematics Olympiad and needs to see more learners choose mathematics to enter the financial sector,” she said.
Jiya said her company remains committed to continue sponsoring the event in the years to come.
The Mathematics Olympiad programme is run in partnership with Mzuzu University’s Department of Mathematics.
Head of the Mathematics Department at the university, Artz Luwanda, said the commitment will go a mile in inspiring the students.
“The funding is timely and the department of mathematics at the university wants to see more students impacted positively with the funding,” he said.
At the event, Old Mutual also handed over a cheque worth K250, 000 to cover tuition fees for the winner of the 2015 Olympiad, Mathews Chaula.
Chaula has since enrolled with the College of Medicine in Blantyre.
