Old Mutual Group on Monday bade farewell to Chris Kapanga who served as Chief Executive Officer for Old Mutual Malawi for four years before joining Old Mutual Ghana.

Old Mutual Africa Chief Executive Officer Jonas Mushosho described Kapanga as belonging to a rare breed of pan-African business leaders.

Mushosho said Kapanga joined the Old Mutual Group at a time the local business was transitioning from being a life insurance focused entity to a financial services group.

He said under his leadership, Kapanga over saw the localisation of the asset management capability in Malawi which resulted in the creation of the now Old Mutual Investment Group.

“He also oversaw the implementation of a new business unit which was the first open collective investment scheme and this still remains the only open collective investment scheme operating in this market. This is the Old Mutual Unit Trusts Company,” Mushosho said.

During his six year stay in Old Mutual Group, Kapanga won the Best Business Plan Execution Award in both Malawi and Ghana in 2014 and 2016, respectively.

“He thus became the first CEO in the Old Mutual Africa Group to win this award in two different countries. This award is given to the CEOwho comes first in meeting and delivering the business plan for any particular financial year,” Mushosho said.

New Old Mutual Malawi Group Chief Executive Officer Edith Jiya hailed Kapanga for the mentorship as well as professionalism hein stilled in the local team.

“He made it clear in 2011 that Old Mutual Malawi was a sleeping giant that just needed to be awoken from its slumber. He worked to make that happen,” Jiya said.

Kapanga, who has been in the insurance industry for 36 years, praised members of staff of Old Mutual Malawi as well as the board of directors for the support given to him during his tenure.
