Financial services firm, Old Mutual, has pumped K27 million into the 2023 edition of Mathematics Olympiad to be hosted by the Mzuzu University.
Old Mutual Mathematics Olympiad is a flagship mathematics competition in Malawi which has been running for seven years since its resuscitation in 2015.
Speaking after handing over a dummy cheque to Mzuni officials on Monday, Old Mutual Pension Services Company General Manager Tawonga Manda said the firm was delighted to contribute towards a competition which will help shape potential contributors in key sectors of the economy.
“There is a need to empower students in the subject [mathematics] which has had an impact on the national economy through various disciplines including engineering, economics, auditing and accounting,” Manda said.
Mzuni Dean of Faculty of Science Artz Luwanda hailed Old Mutual for the support.
Luwanda said the funds will be used for administering the competition which attracts over 200 students.
The competition will commence on January 14 2023 and will be held in clusters.
Winners will walk away with prizes including cash, trophies and mathematics textbooks for their respective schools.
