Old, new wine in ‘Utsi Tuluka’
They say it is foolhardy to mix old and new wine.
But, in music, old and new wine— meaning, established artists and those who are new and hot— add colour and detail to a stage performance.
This is what Team Entertainers has conspired to do at Motel Paradise in Blantyre this evening. The old, in the name of Malawi Police Orchestra and, to some extent, Charles Msaku, and the relatively new— in the name of The Black Missionaries, which comes with established artists such as Anthony Makondetsa and new one such as Yanjanani Chumbu— come face to face in a show that threatens to spill into the early hours of Saturday.
Utsi Tuluka, according to Team Entertainers chief executive officer Tonderai Banda, is a term derived from his father’s favourite phrase.
In his father’s vocabulary, ‘Utsi Tuluka’ refers to a hot live performance.
“My father likes to say ‘Utsi Tuluka’ in reference to the smoke machines Team Entertainers is renowned for. So, we decided to name the party after that phrase. In short, we mean to say there will be fireworks,” Tonderai said.
Tonderai added that they have organised the show to rekindle old memories while creating new hopes.
