The Total Energies Africa Cup of Nations trophy will be in the country today in honour of Malawi National Football Team’s qualification to the continental football showpiece.
According to communication from Total Malawi Limited, the trophy will tour some townships in Blantyre this morning, with a corporate cocktail event set to take place at Armallyis Hotel this evening.
Sports Minister Ulemu Msungama is expected to grace the evening event.
Football Association of Malawi President Walter Nyamilandu said this was great news to the country.
“This is an honour and privilege that has been accorded to Malawi as one of the few countries that have qualified for the Afcon finals. It accords fans in the country an opportunity to be part and parcel of the prestigious tournament from the beginning of the preparations to the end of the tournament. It is also important for the Flames to see what is at stake, first hand, as a source of motivation to excel at the tournament and endeavour to bring the trophy back home,” Nyamilandu said.
Flames goalkeeper Ernest Kakhobwe also said this was a motivating factor to the players.
“This is good news and it also feels good to be part of the players that fought this battle,” Kakhobwe said.
Flames attacker Micium Mhone shared the sentiments
“It feels good that we are being honoured in this way. This is great news to the fans and the rest of the soccer fraternity. To young players like me, this is something great because I am seeing the trophy on home soil for the first time,” Mhone said.
The Flames will be making a third appearance at the Afcon to take place in Cameroon next year.
Malawi were placed in Group B with Senegal, Zimbabwe and Guinea.
Meanwhile, Nyamilandu has said, since the trophy will be rotating in other countries, there will not be more arrangements to show the trophy in other regions.
