One more arrested in Mzuzu drug theft

Police in Lilongwe have arrested Kondwani Mhone, an alleged accomplice to Mzuzu Central Hospital (MCH) cleaner, Kondwani Kanthenga, who was arrested on May 29 for being suspected to have stolen various medical drugs and equipment at the hospital.

The medical supplies and equipment that police now say are estimated at K2.4 million were found during a night raid at Kanthenga’s home following the discovery of a carton containing drugs that were destined for Lilongwe.

Northern Region Police spokesperson, Peter Kalaya, says Mhone is proprietor of Covenant Medical Suppliers that has in the meantime been sealed pending the outcome of the theft charges he is facing.

“We followed through the matter and discovered that Mhone was the recipient of the carton containing medical drugs in Lilongwe that Kanthenga was sending from Mzuzu,” Kalaya said.

Police in Lilongwe arrested Mhone almost three days after Kanthenga’s arrest and both of them are now on remand at Mzuzu prison awaiting hearing of their case.

“The premises of Covenant Medical Suppliers which he [Mhone] owns have in the meantime been sealed to allow prosecution take place,” said Kalaya warning of further arrests since investigations on the matter are on-going.

Since the stolen supplies had Ministry of Health labels, according to Kalaya, police brought in officials from the ministry who estimated the drugs and the equipment at K2.4 million.

Among the medical supplies and equipment were microscopes, medical gloves, bandages, digital blood pressure monitors, tongue dispensers and empty sample collecting tubes.
