OPC replaces newly-appointed Mera Board member

Joyce Chitsulo

Secretary to the President and Cabinet (SPC) Zangazanga Chikhosi has replaced Lameck Nchembe, who was included in the newly appointed Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (Mera) Board announced on Thursday.

Nchembe’s replacement comes following a query by the Public Appointments Committee (Pac) of Parliament.

Nchembe has been replaced with Rhodrick Chingota.

Pac Chairperson Joyce Chitsulo confirmed the development.

“I have just received the letter from Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC). Nchembe has been replaced with Rhodrick Chingota,” she said.

In 2020, Chikhosi had asked Pac to conduct an inquiry towards the removal of the Joseph Bvumbwe-led Mera Board. The members of the board, except Nchembe, resigned before appearing at Pac and, according to Chitsulo, Nchembe was the only one that appeared before MPs.

In an interview earlier about the newly-appointed board, Chitsulo said the committee had noted the anomally and met Friday afternoon where they agreed to write the SPC to replace Nchembe.

“Lameck Nchembe was declared incompetent by our committee [in 2020] and we told the Secretary to the President then after our assessment. And now we noted this [reappointment] and we met today [Friday] and the committee resolved that we should write the SPC to replace him because he cannot appear before our committee again,” she said.

The new board appointed on Thursday comes after the resignation of the board appointed in September 2020.

The new board, which is headed by Reckford Kampanje, has Innocencia Chirombo as vice chairperson and Charles Kambauwa and Ulemu Kambwiri as members.

Secretary for Energy, Director of Energy and the Mera chief executive officer are the ex- officio members.
