Over 10 fights for Chimbalanga’s memorial

At least 13 fights have been organised in honour of late former Malawi Boxing Association (Maba) president Ladda Chimbalanga, who died in 2018.

The professional and amateur fights will take place today [Sunday] at Sun Village Lodge in Liwonde.

One of the organisers, Francis Kadzakalowa, who is also Maba vice president, said they decided to hold the memorial fight to commemorate late Chimbalanga, who is widely regarded as boxing father figure.

“Late Chimbalanga used his resources to promote both amateur and professional boxing in the country. A lot of boxers that are well known now were identified during his time.

“It is not easy for a promoter to give free transport and accommodation to boxers and fellow promoters when he is not the one organising the boxing bill,” he said.

Kadzakalowa said they intend to make the memorial tournament an annual event.

“We are also working towards re-establishing the Sun Village Boxing Club in honour of late Chimbalanga. Going forward this will be an annual event where we want to identify and nurture boxers. Good professional boxers are a product of good amateur programme,” he said.

One of the boxers, Chikondi Makawa, who will face Juma Jack in an eight-round middleweight non-title fight, welcomed the arrangement.

“Let us be honest, most of the boxers that have been active from 90’s to around 2015 hold Chimbalanga in high esteem. He was a father to all of us. I hope the memorial is not just for this year only,” he said.

Some of the boxers that will feature in the bill include Pemphero Nkhoma, Orbert Makayika, Shekina Nazombe, Stella Zimba, Stephano Binauli, Sean Joseph, Ishmael Amidu and Snowden Munyanje.
