After failing to take place last year due to Covid, Mathumela Music Festival, run by musician and producer Lulu, returns this year at Masintha Ground in Lilongwe.
Lulu, real name Lawrence Khwitsa, said Wednesday all was set for the festival, in its fourth edition, which has attracted over 27 artists.
Apart from him as the headliner, some of the artists expected to perform at the festival include Gwamba, Skeffa Chimoto, Kell Kay, Mr Zembani, Wendy Harawa, Marste, Janta, Matumbi, Rudo Chakwera, Thocco Katimba, Third Eye, Temwah, Erik Paliani, Supa Boy, Lambanie Dube, BFB, Kalimba Band, Marvellous Deeds and Kamuzu Barracks Gospel Singers.
“We used to hold this festival on January 1 but we decided to hold it in November this year. My aim is to give maximum entertainment to my hood and it is all about giving back to the community for all the support,” the singer and guitarist said.
He said he has nothing to give back to the people for the love rather than bringing them a free-of-charge festival.
“I would like to thank sponsors such as Standard Bank through Unayo, Airtel Malawi and AKA Enterprise, among others, for being part of this festival. I also would like to thank fellow artists for sparing their time to be part of this event,” the ‘Mbambande’ star said.
He said he developed interest in the festival through crusades he has watched over the years.
“This is also a platform where I want to give up-and-coming artists a chance to showcase their talents and this is the only way we can grow,” he said.
Lulu said he was thankful to God for the talent which has taken him to various places entertaining people. He has also produced several songs that people continue to enjoy.
The Lilongwe-based artist, who has a band—Mathumela and a studio also named Mathumela, is arguably one of the talented artists the country has ever produced.
However, some quarters have faulted him for failing to grow due to his lack of seriousness in putting up a proper management team to manage his music affairs and raise his brand.
