Malawi under-20 national football team Coach, Meke Mwase, has dropped Laurent Banda from the Junior Flames’ squad because he is over-aged.
Banda, who plays for TN Stars was roped into the squad on Monday alongside 2017 Southern Region Premier Division Golden Boot award winner, Tony Biasi and Sam Gopani from Lilongwe Under-20 team, to beef up the squad.
But a day after training with the team in Lilongwe, Mwase said they realised that Banda was a year older than the required age.
“The idea was for one of them to replace Peter Banda who is with Orlando Pirates reserve for trials. Now, we will just use the remaining players. We will consider Laurent for under-23 team assignments because he is a good player,” Mwase said.
The Junior Flames are expected to play a friendly against Zambia at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe tomorrow, ahead of the first-leg encounter against Angola in the first-round of African Cup of Nations qualifiers at the same venue.
Mwase said preparations are progressing well.
“The new guys are fitting in well. It is good that we are hosting Zambia, which is a good side. They will certainly give us an idea of what we can expect from Angola,” Mwase said.
Malawi progressed to the next round to face Angola after holding eSwatini (Swaziland) to a one-all draw in the return-leg match, following a 0-0 tie in the first-leg.
After the return-match, eSwatini Coach, Dumisani Makhanya, accused Malawi of using 25-year-old players, but the Junior Flames Team Manager, Aubrey Nankhuni, dismissed such allegations.
