Oxfam targets 40,000 families in Cyclone Idai response

By Eric Msikiti:

The number of disaster victims being supported by Oxfam Malawi has reached 40,000, a senior official has said.

Oxfam Malawi Country Director, Lingalireni Mihowa, said this during a tour of Phalombe District, which saw a delegation from Oxfam America and other well-wishers appreciate the extent of the damage.

“One of the things that have come out clearly is that most Malawians who were affected by floods following Cyclone Idai in some parts of the country will not be able to meet their food entitlements this year.

“Most of the families face hunger because their crops were washed away by water. In addition, people need access to clean water and hygiene. There is also need for assets-building as most of them lost assets and property to the floods,” Mihowa said.

One of the charity’s supporters Jim Kraft reiterated his continued support to humanitarian work in Malawi.

“As one of the funders, I wanted to come and see how my money is being used in the country. I will continue to support such initiatives,” Kraft said.

Oxfam Malawi is targeting 200,000 households with its interventions.
