The Public Appointments Committee of Parliament (PAC) Thursday confirmed Grace Malera as Malawi’s new Ombudsman, reliable sources in the committee confirmed.

Malera takes over the position from Martha Chizuma, who is Anti-Corruption Bureau Director General.

Information from the committee indicated that Malera performed well out of four other candidates who competed for the post.

Other candidates included Tadala Chimkwezule, Wellington Kazembe, Gloria Namondwe and Yamikani Kambauwa.

“Five people competed for the position. However, Malera scored 22.6 out of 25; as such, she has emerged as the best candidate for the post,” two sources said.

Meanwhile, Malawi Human Rights Commission Executive Secretary Habiba Osman has hailed the appointment.

She said the development meant Malawi was making headway in achieving gender equality goals, as espoused in Section 11 of the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi.

“This is a step farther in as far as the issue of women holding decision-making positions is concerned. Her selection comes with a huge responsibility as she will be holding other positions like that of commissioner at Malawi Human Rights Commission.

“Malera has vast experience and the country should expect the best from her because she has also served in many roles, including on the international scene,” Osman said.

Human Rights Defenders Coalition Chairperson Gift Trapence also welcomed the development.

“We are happy that the post that a woman was holding has been filled by another woman. We ask Malera to continue the good work of her predecessor,” he said.

However, Pac Chairperson Joyce Chitsulo said it is only the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) that can announce results of the interviews.

The Office of the Ombudsman was awarded for being the overall best performing public institution in the 2018-19 financial year.

The Overall Public Service Best Performer award was given in Lilongwe at the 2018-2019 Performance Contract Awards Ceremony organised by the OPC.
