Pac meets Lazarus Chakwera

By Rebecca Chimjeka:

MATONGA—Pac to look into contentious issues

Public Affairs Committee (Pac) lead mediator in the ongoing dialogue, Gilford Matonga, has said their meeting with Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Lazarus Chakwera Thursday was successful, as he assured the quasi-religious group that the party believes in dialogue and peace.

“Our discussion was based on the discussions we had with President Peter Mutharika, on long last solution on peace, especially resolutions that could end the political impasse that has been taking place after the May 21 tripartite elections,”Matonga said after meeting the MCP leader at the party’s headquarters in Lilongwe.

Matonga said whatever they have discussed with Chakwera would form part of the feedback they would relay back to Mutharika.

He said they would look into contentious issues, which Chakwera and all stakeholders Pac has met, want resolved.

Chakwera said the party asked Pac to give feedback to Mutharika

“I have sent back the message to Mutharika because this country does not need short-term solutions, but long lasting solutions,”Chakwera said.

The meeting follows continued protests that are taking place in the country against the management and outcome of the May 21 tripartite elections amid calls for Malawi Electoral Commission Chairperson Justice Jane Ansah to resign.

MCP and UTM leader Saulos Chilima are challenging the election results in court.
