Pac sends back Lands officials

The Public Accounts Committee (Pac) of Parliament on Wednesday sent back Ministry of Lands officials for failing to provide relevant information to the committee.

Pac Chairperson, Alekeni Menyani, said the ministry officials did not attach any evidence to the written responses provided to the committee.

“We sent the Ministry of Lands [officials] back on a number of issues. The first is that they did not attach any evidence to the written responses provided to the committee and we thought that it was difficult for us to independently verify whether indeed the Auditor General had looked at these documents,” he said.

He further said some of their responses were indicated as if the matters had already been concluded.

“They were in contradiction with the Auditor General; when the Auditor General said there were some other issues left such as unaccounted for money but further to that, it is because the attitude of the former controlling officer who is retired seemed to be uncooperative with the committee and we thought that we could not start off from that note,” he said

Menyani said when the committee gets the document, they will meet the ministry officials again.

“In the manner that they responded, they just gave us an answer but fell short of attaching supporting documents because if the Auditor General examines your submissions, he issues a certificate to confirm if the matters are water under the bridge, but they did not have such certificates,” he said.

The Ministry of Lands was responding to the Auditor General’s report of 2012.

When contacted, the ministry’s spokesperson Charles Vintulla said he was not aware of the development.
