Pac to write Inspector General on Covid funds plunder

NAMALOMBA— We are not impressed

The Public Accounts Committee (Pac) of Parliament has said it will write Inspector General of Police George Kainja to unleash fiscal police on public officers suspected to have taken part in the plunder of K6.2 billion meant for Covid response.

Pac Chairperson Shadreck Namalomba said committee members were working on a report that would highlight how district councils mismanaged the funds.

“Following the meeting we had with district councils on the misappropriation of Covid funds from April 26 to May 11, we have observed with disappointment that the money was used as a bonus to the institutions.

“We, as a committee, are not impressed. The money was used for activities not related to coronavirus prevention,’’ Namalomba said.

He observed that the committee has already submitted its recommendations to the Office of the President and Cabinet to discipline officers that approved unjustified Covid allowances as well as those that oversaw the procurement of goods not related to Covid.

During the public inquiries, committee members ordered some district councils to pay back all the money they pocketed as sitting allowances during council and service committee meetings.

In February this year, President Lazarus Chakwera ordered the National Audit Office to institute an audit into the usage of K6.2 billion meant for Covid response after reports of abuse.
