National paralympic finals—a multi-sports event for disabled athletes—are scheduled to take place at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe on Sunday.

Hosts Malawi Paralympic Committee (MPC) President, James Chiutsi, said 30 finalists will be drawn from all the regions. The qualifying games took place in 16 districts.

The finals follow a Paralympic Awareness and Athlete Development programme which MPC has been running since last September, courtesy of the support of International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and Malawi National Council of Sports.

He said the programme was aimed at creating awareness on the importance of involving people with disabilities in sports.

“The tournament targeted under-20 visually-impaired athletes from all over Malawi. The launch was at Montfort School for the Blind, followed by the training of all administrators involved.

“Initially, the programme intended to identify about 100 visually- impaired athletes, but there was massive interest that saw about 400 athletes taking part in the games,” Chiutsi said.

Meanwhile, IPC and China Council of Lions Clubs officials are in the country to appreciate the work of MPC.
