Parliament repeals Mines and Minerals Act

Parliament has passed the Mines and Minerals Bill, which seeks to repeal the Mines and Minerals Act of 2019.
The Act will, in turn, be replaced with a new Act that incorporates provisions for the establishment of an independent mining and mineral resources regulatory authority.
Mining Minister Monica Chang’anamuno said the regulatory authority will be responsible for regulating mineral resources and mining activities in the country.
It will also be responsible for granting mining licences.
“The authority will also be responsible for inspection of mining activities and advising the minister on policy matters in the mining sector,” she said.
Opposition United Democratic Front leader Lilian Patel commended the government for establishing the authority, saying this will help address challenges facing the mining sector.
“The country has made mistakes before. We hope this bill will address challenges that the country’s mining sector has been facing,” Patel said.
