Patricia Kaliati warns against piracy

Minister of Civic Education and Community Development, Patricia Kaliati, on Sunday warned against piracy at a mega gospel show organised by Favoured Martha, duped Favoured Celebration, which took place at Robins Park in Blantyre.

In her speech, Kaliati said a lot of artists fail to benefit from their talent because of the vice.

“Most of our musicians don’t enjoy their sweat due to piracy. The music bootleggers reap where they did not sow while the artists cry foul. So I should warn all those who pirate CDs and DVDs of these artists without their permission [that] we will be on each other’s neck this coming year so that the artists should benefit,” she said.

Kaliati advised artists to continue informing, educating and entertaining people with their music.

“We will give you a place where you can sell your music. We have also discussed in Parliament that al l radio stations should be playing 70 percent of local music. We will be watching with keen interest all the radio stations that do not submit royalties to artists for the music played because most radio stations play local hits but to not pay royalties to benefit those artists whose songs were played,” she said.

Kaliati explained that the government will be reminding radio stations to submit their royalties to Copyright Society of Malawi.

Kaliati, who apologised for her late-coming, finished off by commending the role gospel artists are playing in the country.

“I should thank my sister, Favoured Martha, for inviting me here. I should apologise for my late-coming because I’m also coming from another function in Lunzu. While thanking you for supporting our friends [artists] with different talents may God bless you and please help her celebrate. Continue preaching to us so that when this life ends nobody should lie that there was no one to preach to them,” she said.

Supporting artists at the show included Ethel Kamwendo Banda, Great Angels Choir, Evans Meleka, Limbani Simenti and Sir Paul Banda.
