Patrick Mabedi appointed Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach

Former Malawi skipper Patrick Mabedi—whose playing career was defined by loyalty and high work ethic—has reunited with South Africa Premier Soccer League (PSL) limping giants Kaizer Chiefs.

The Soweto giants unveiled Mabedi as their assistant coach Tuesday, according to www.

“I am happy to be back home,” Mabedi told the website.

“I look forward to making a contribution to the success of this great institution. This is a privilege. I wish to thank the club management for this opportunity.”

Seen as a future coach for the Flames, Mabedi has, with effect from July 1, signed a two-year contract with Chiefs. The PSL giants have gone two seasons without silverware.

The ex-Flames’ hard-tackling sweeper and deputy trainer has replaced Ghanaian John Painstil as the right handman for Chiefs Coach, Steve Komphela.

In a statement, Chiefs said they were thrilled reuniting with the man who served them with distinction between 1998 and 2004.

The 43-year-old, who signed from Nyasa Big Bullets, captained Chiefs to PSL titles in 2004 and 2005, while also lifting the Mandela Cup in 2001.

He was, until his appointment, coaching National First Division side Cape Town All Stars.

After leaving Chiefs, Mabedi played for Moroka Swallows before being made community liason officer then youth team coach.

He got his breakthrough in 2015 when he was hired as assistant coach to the then Mpumalanga Black Aces coach Muhsin Ertugral.

Mabedi showed his loyalty to Chiefs last year when he declined an offer to work under Ertugral after he picked a job at rivals, Orlando Pirates.

He earned 21 caps for the Flames and scored five goals, according to unofficial records.

Football Association of Malawi officials were not readily available for a comment on Mabedi’s recognition in a foreign land.

Kinnah Phiri of Mbeya City FC in Tanzania and John Maduka (South Africa) are other foreign-based Malawian coaches.
