Patrick Mabedi fails first test

Patrick Mabedi has failed his first test as Kaizer Chiefs interim Head Coach after his team lost 3-1 to Flames Captain Limbikani Mzava’s Golden Arrows on Tuesday night in South Africa’s Premier Soccer League.

Mabedi stepped in the shoes of Steve Komphela who resigned as head coach on Saturday after Chiefs’ 2-0 loss to Free State Stars in the Nedbank Cup semi-final.

The former Flames captain was not downcast after the match, saying he was still proud of his troops.

The match got off to the worst possible start for Chiefs, who conceded after only four minutes, followed by a straight red card to Leonardo Castro in the 16th minute.

“We started off very badly. We slept a little bit and I think what affected us most is the red card. Everything went out after that. We lost control,” Mabedi told SuperSport Television in a post-match interview.

“But I give credit to the players. They did well, they fought. They showed character. We have to say we tried our best. If you look at the goals we conceded, it looks like to me that we just gave it cheaply, some individual errors, it is one of those things.”

Mzava said he was relieved to have helped Arrows earn three points, though at the expense of his countryman.

The win took Arrows to ninth place on the league’s standings, while Chiefs remain fourth.
