Patrick Mabedi for U-20, Deklerk Msakakuona for U-17

Patrick Mabedi

FAVOURED ONE—Msakakuona

Former Flames defender Patrick Mabedi and Blue Eagles coach Deklerk Msakauona have reportedly been named as Malawi under-20 national football team coach and under-17 coach, respectively.

Sources said the two have been selected after they were successful during the interviews which were held recently in Lilongwe.

Mabedi defeated fellow contenders Tione Mhone, Audlow Makonyola, Franco Ndawa, Aubrey Nankhuni, Leo Mpulula and Bob Mpinganjira whereas Msakakuona emerged as the successful candidate beating Milias Pofera, Trevor Kajawa and George Zulu.

Inside sources in the Ministry of Sports, Youth and Culture, confirmed the development this week.

However, when contacted yesterday, Principal Secretary in the ministry, Chauncy Simwaka, was reluctant to comment on the matter.

“I was not part of the panel for the interviews and I have not seen the report on my desk. Government has procedures for recruitment so once everything is ready the public will be informed,” he said.

Only coaches with a minimum of Confederation of African Football (Caf) B-Licence were short-listed for the interviews.

Once the process has been finalised, Mabedi and Msakakuona will be under government payroll but will be deployed at Football Association of Malawi (Fam).

Mabedi has vast experience in coaching having had stints with South African giants Kaizer Chiefs and Black Leopards whereas Msakakuona, currently with Blue Eagles FC, was in-charge of the under-17 for three consecutive years. He helped the side to win bronze medal in Mauritius in 2017 but the team exited in the group stages last year on home soil.

Fam General Secretary, Alfred Gunda was not readily available for his comment. The association’s president Walter Nyamilandu could not answer his mobile phone yesterday.

Malawi is expected to host the Under-17 Cosafa Cup from July 22 to August 1 in Blantyre whereas the under-20 will also take part in the Cosafa Cup later this year.

Government, Fam and sub technical committee only shortlisted local coaches for the job after rebuffing foreign coaches. A total of six foreign coaches two each from Germany and France, one from Trinidad and Tobbago and one based in Qatar applied for the job.
