Malawi under 20 national football team head coach Patrick Mabedi has called Spain-based striker Zizwa Mcpetrie Hanjahanja in the squad preparing for this year’s Cosafa Youth Championship in South Africa next month.
Mabedi, in an interview Tuesday, said the youngster would join the under-20 squad today.
“The only foreign-based player that is not over-aged is the one in Spain and is coming tomorrow (Wednesday). The other guys are over-aged and most of them are 21, so we cannot have them on board,” Mabedi said about Mcpetrie Hanjahanja who signed for Racing Akra C.F from Alicante Football Academy in February this year in Spain.
However, Mabedi has failed to call versatile Charles Petro from Moldovan side Sheriff FC and Francisco Madinga of Dira Gori in Georgia who, according to their club profiles, are 19 and 20 years, respectively.
Mabedi said it was also a blessing in disguise not to include Petro and Madinga, who also play for the senior side, to be safe on age bracket.
“We need to take players who are of the right age. I could have been happy to have more foreign based players but unfortunately with the age I will not consider them,” Mabedi said.
The former Kaizer Chiefs skipper said preparations were going on well ahead of the team’s departure slated for Sunday.
“Everything is going on well and the players are fighting to be in the final squad. I am confident that the boys will do better,” he said.
