Patrick Mabedi lauds Under-20 Cup

Malawi Under-20 National Football Team Coach Patrick Mabedi has hailed the on-going Manchester Motor Mechanical Centre Under-20 Football Cup being competed for by teams in the Blantyre and Districts Youth Football League.

Mabedi said the competition, which has attracted 16 teams, was a platform for the youngsters to hone skills.

“For teams and players to develop, they need competitions besides training. It is important that the city has this cup which is helping teams assess their performance.

“As Malawi Under 20 coach I have to follow such competitions because I can easily follow the performance of the players. Besides that, I feel my presence is also a motivation to the participating teams,” he said.

The league’s general secretary Joel Magola said they were hopeful the cup would help them to unearth more talent.

“Our core duty is to help in identifying and nurturing talent. We feel this cup is the right platform to help us achieve our goals,” Magola said.

During games played on Sunday, Nyasa Big Bullets Youth beat Yizo Yizo 3-1 whereas Soche Madrid defeated Future Stars 2-0. Bangwe United thrashed CC Stars 4-0.
