Patrick Mabedi mum

PatrickMabedi has been appointed as head coach of South Africa First Division side, Cape Town All Stars— his major breakthrough in coaching, which casts doubt on his availability for Malawi National Football Team.

Mabedi has twice, since 2013, worked as the Flames’ assistant coach, with his latest stint ending on September 10 after serving under interim coach, Nsanzurwimo Ramadhan.

In a statement released yesterday, Cape Town All Stars’ General Manager, Faeez Dulvie, confirmed that they had roped in Mabedi alongside his former Moroka Swallows’ team-mate, Greg Etafia, as goalkeeper coach. Dylan Deane is Mabedi’s deputy.

“Patrick is an ambitious young coach who is highly qualified, having done his Uefa A and B Licences in Germany. We expect him to bring renewed energy and enthusiasm to the team as we look to turn around a poor start to the campaign,” Dulvie said.

“Etafia has a huge amount of experience as a goalkeeper in the PSL and like Patrick, is a young coach keen to make an impact on the game. We are confident they will make a positive impact on the team and welcome them to the club.”

Mabedi, who alongside Derklerk Msakakuona worked under Ramadhan, was elusive yesterday when asked about his availability for the national team.

Football Association of Malawi (Fam) General Secretary, Suzgo Nyirenda, yesterday said Mabedi informed the association that he was talking to a prospective employer in South Africa.

“It would be difficult for me to comment on his new job. If whoever will be appointed coach will consider him as an assistant coach, then that will be up to him to discuss with his new employers. There are certain cases when people can coach a club and a national team,” Nyirenda said.

Mabedi and Msakakuona were preffered right-hand men to Ramadhan, who is in the running for the Flames’ job.

In South Africa, Mabedi recently worked as an assistant to Muhsin Ertugral at Mpumalanga Black Aces. Aces sold their Premiership status to Cape Town City with Ertugral joining Orlando Pirates.

Ertugral is believed to have recommended Mabedi to Cape Town All Stars’ management.

Mabedi faces a huge task to turn around fortunes of the club which lies second from the foot of the Division’s table.
