Paul Banda’s DVD set to chronicle his journey

Veteran musician Paul Banda has done a lot for the country including training and recording music for several other artists through his Imbirani Yahwe Studios which is no longer in the picture.

The old-timer, who has promised to drop a fresh album, has been avoiding working on a DVD until when he was convinced by one Zakariah Jezzman, who manages Anthu Ambiri Band.

It took him time for Jezzman to convince Paul to work on a DVD which he found it challenging and deemed it something which was only for musicians of this generation.

But in an effort aimed at reaching out to many people but also preserve his works, Paul decided to take the challenge and work on a DVD titled The Best of Sir Paul Banda.

This will be the first DVD for the musician who retired at some moment before coming back to the stage.

“I really didn’t want to do this but I was convinced. We have worked hard with the little resources we have and I hope once it comes out people will give me support.

I did say that I used to admire artists like Moses Makawa, he was a very good guitarist but I never saw him so I thought I should do a DVD so that the younger generation can appreciate my music,” said Paul.

Recorded by Anthu Ambiri, which is also set to produce phungu Joseph Nkasa’s DVD, the DVD has 10 tracks.

“We have already finished eight songs and we are only remaining with two which we are doing the final touches and we should finish this month or February,” said Anthu Ambiri Band’s Director Zachariah Jezzman.

He said they have also compiled a one hour documentary for the musician.

“We have also compiled a one hour documentary in which Sir Paul Banda has given exclusive details on his music journey. And a booklet has been prepared that contains some summaries of Paul’s journey in music, his pictures from a tender age to now,” said Jazzmen.

He said the pack will have all the package of Paul’s life and that this is why it will be sold at a high price.

“Anthu Ambiri Records will organise live shows for the musician as a way of marketing and distributing the DVD.

At the moment two music videos ‘Malilime,’ and ‘Achimwemwe Muzigona Kunyumba,’ have been released,” he said.

Meanwhile Jezzman said they are currently working on the venue for the launch.

He said the DVD should be ready by April end with the launch set for June.

“Paul is a music legend and that is what my record label would like to be associated with because it resonates well with the name Anthu Ambiri. We started with Phungu Joseph Nkasa and then Paul,” said Jezzman.

He also said that Anthu Ambiri Band has been restructured and that at the moment it is being led by Kaka real name Kanthu Kalinda.

Meanwhile Anthu Ambiri Band starts its performances this coming weekend performing at Kasaulina Area 25 in Lilongwe on Saturday and then Kassim Place in Area 12.
