Paul Chaphuka’s daughter wishes she learned more from father

Paul Chaphuka’s daughter Cynthia, who resurfaced recently after playing backing vocals in Soldier Lucius Banda’s son Johnny Mr Zembani’s debut single ‘You Are the One’, has said she intends to continue her father’s musical journey although she did not learn much from him.

Cynthia said she wished she learned a lot from him before his death.

“I was four when my father passed on. He used to play his guitar and make me sing while he recorded my voice on radio cassette unfortunately I lost the tapes,” she said.

Cynthia, who was born on June 24 1993 and is the first born of three girls, recalls one time when her father recorded a song of one of her favourite artists— South Africa’s Rebecca Malope.

“I have grown to love Rebecca Malope’s songs and I once told my father that I wanted to be like her but I don’t think I still want that,” she said.

Cynthia said she most of the times listens to his father’s songs.

“His lyrics came from the heart and also were drawn from life experiences whether his own or other people. I am happy with the strides he made and his music has impacted a lot of people and if you look at some of the issues he touched on, the situations are there for people to see now, you talk of HIV/Aids, Covid and other diseases,” she said.

Cynthia said although she wants to attempt to continue her father’s mission, she cannot be like him.

“His shoes are just too big for me to wear, he was such a talented person and was so passionate about music,” she said.

Cynthia said his father was multi-talented and that he played different instruments.

“I wish I started learning instruments at a tender age. I love musical instruments and drums are my priority. I have that urge to learn God willing,” she said.

Cynthia said she will try to continue her father’s legacy directly or indirectly.

“By this, I mean the music industry is vast and has a lot of roles to be filled out besides being an active artist,” she said.

Currently working with Paralegal Advisory Service as a Paralegal Officer in Balaka, Cynthia admitted that she has not been active as a musician.

“But in 2015 I did a duet with Young Stones, son to legend Stonald Lungu and the track is titled ‘Msozi’. I am happy to have also done a song with Johnny, hope to do more,” she said.

Johnny better known as Mr Zembani recently also heaped praise on Cynthia saying she has potential to offer more in music.

Chaphuka was no ordinary musician and his album Ndichiritseni, in which he worked with Soldier Lucius Banda made huge sales on the market.
