Malawi’s rising professional golfer, Paul Chidale, outclassed six counterparts to win TNM Malawi Open Golf Championship for the professional category at Lilongwe Golf Club over the weekend.
The professional category was, for the first time, included in the tournament, which also comprised Championship Division, divisions A, B, juniors and seniors.
At the end of the tournament, Chidale was the star performer, with Victor Kachepatsonga coming on second place followed by third-placed Adam Sailesi.
In his victory speech, Chidale said it was a morale boost ahead of Zambia Open.
“I started poorly on Thursday but I changed my game on the last day of the competition. The tournament came at a good time because I used it to prepare for tough tournaments in Zambia and Zimbabwe,” Chidale said.
As per tradition, professional golfers received cash prizes whereas golfers in the amateurs’ section got assorted prizes from TNM.
In the Championship Division, George Chisambo emerged the champion with a gross score of 232 followed by Ganizani Lusho who counted out Gabriel Kambale on 246.
TNM Malawi Acting Chief Executive Officer, Eric Valentine, said the tournament was unique due to the inclusion of professionals.
“We are proud to be associated with the development of golf in the country. For the past 11 years, we have seen more golfers taking part in the tournament and we are happy that professional golfers took part in this year’s tournament,” Valentine said.
Golf Union of Malawi President, Hudson Kantwanje, hailed TNM for developing golf.
Over 150 golfers took part in the tournament.
TNM also donated K500, 000 for maintenance of the golf club.
