Peace Chawinga is new Queens coach

Complex Tigresses mentor Peace Chawinga-Kalua has been named new Malawi Queens coach following the latest reshuffle which has seen Mary Waya being demoted to the post of a deputy coach.

Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) general secretary, Carol Bapu, confirmed the changes saying they were done after analyzing the curriculum vitae (CV’s) of the prospective coaches.

The development puts to an end speculation that had been rife ever since Waya’s contract ended.

“Nam executive carefully analysed the CV’s and felt to give a chance to Peace Kalua to lead the technical panel with Mary Waya as the assistant. Of course, we considered several other coaches and we felt the two are the best at the moment,” she said.

Bapu said Nam also took into consideration the performances of Chawinga-Kalua at the domestic scene when selecting the coach to take charge of the team.

Last season, Kaluwa inspired Tigresses to a double after winning the Presidential Netball trophy and also the GOtv Netball Champions League.

Under her reign, Tigresses were unbeaten in over 20 games. The Kau-Kau ladies only blemish was when they failed to defend the OG Issa Southern Region Netball League (now the Rainbow Paints SRNL) after they lost to Diamonds in a league decider.

Waya endured a difficult reign at Queens as the side suffered eight successive defeats in the Fast5 Series in Australia and Test Match Series against England.

As we went to press, Nam had not yet contacted the two coaches and both Chawinga-Kalua and Waya could not be reached on their mobile phones.

Apparently, both Waya and Chawinga-Kalua worked as co-coaches when Malawi surrendered the Africa Netball Championship in 2013 after hosting the continental showpiece.

Now, the two must work together again, as Queens prepare for two events next month. The Malawi national netball team travels to South Africa for Diamond Challenge before attempting to snatch the Africa Netball Championship in Namibia.
