Peace Chawinga, Mary Waya fight for Rainbow supremacy

Malawi Queens coaches Peace Chawinga-Kaluwa and Mary Waya will take centre stage when Complex Tigresses date Thunder Queens on the return of the Rainbow Paints Southern Region Netball League action today.

Peace, who turned down an assistant role to Waya at the senior netball side, is now the Malawi Queens coach with Waya as her deputy.

The two would forget their national team working relationship when they lead their charges in pulsating league game.

The two are regarded as the finest players ever to have donned Malawi national netball team colours.

For the last two seasons, Peace with her charges, Complex Tigresses, have dominated the local netball fraternity and in the process have caused pain and sorrow to other teams including Waya’s Thunder Queens (formerly MTL Queens).

Currently, Tigresses are topping the table and look set to reclaim the title they lost on the last day of the league last season.

Peace said her ultimate mission was lead Tigresses to a successful season including winning the league.

“We need to sweep everything. We just hope that our players will follow the instructions. However, we don’t underrate Thunder because they are a big team as well,” she said.

Tigresses have a strong squad revolving around defender Grace Mhango, centre Licy Akidu Fiwa, wing-defender Cathy Yikwanga, shooter Sindie Simtowe, goal attacker Ellen Chibokho and all-rounder Lauren Ngwira.

However, Waya has an equally good side with experienced players like captain Joanna Kachilika, wing defender Esther Kayira and promising players such as Thandie Galeta, goal defender Martha Dambo, centre Pilirani Msukwa, goal attacker Emily Jere and shooter Sherratie Kaiche.

Thunder vice-coach and general secretary, Christina Mkwanda-Nsinji, said they were prepared to take on their rivals.

“The game is a tough one for both teams but we are prepared to derail them,” she said.

In another game, Kukoma Diamonds would take on Antonio Queens.
