The People’s Party (PP) has faulted President Peter Mutharika for speaking against demonstrations in his Friday State of the Nation Address.
In his address, Mutharika said the demonstrations that civil society organisations staged some weeks ago, were meant to destabilise the country.
But PP leader in Parliament, Raphael Mhone said as a constitutional lawyer, Mutharika was supposed to be the last person to talk bad about demonstrations.
Mhone said Mutharika knows that demonstrating against any socio-economic challenges is a human right that needs to be respected by everyone including the President.
“The President knows that the Constitution guarantees everyone the right to assemble and demonstrate and that is explicitly allowed,” Mhone said.
On economy, PP has said it is an insult to Malawians for Mutharika to be talking about economic prosperity when nothing of that has happened in the country.
