After surviving a scare from Mzuzu United in a round of-16 Carlsberg Cup tie, Wizards FC Technical Director, Peter Mponda, is eyeing two players from the Northern Region Premier Division side.
Wizards snatched an unlikely win when they beat Mzuzu 3-1 on post- match penalties at MDC Ground on Saturday to reach the quarterfinals.
Mzuzu appeared to be heading for a victory after lively playmaker, Collen Nkhulambe, had put his side in the lead in the 51st minute.
Wizards controversially grabbed an equaliser through Blessings Phiri, who took advantage of a defensive mix-up and referee Ben Chongwe’s failure to stamp his authority, to equalise three minutes into added time.
During the penalties, Wizards converted through Blessings Joseph, Hendrix Misinde and Keston Kasonda, whereas Davis Chembezi missed.
Nkhulambe scored Mzuzu’s penalty with Atupele Nkhoma, Cliff Sololo and Jabulani Nkhoma missing for the visitors.
After the game, Mponda disclosed that he would like to poach Nkhulambe and fellow attacker Madalitso Chiumia.
“Those guys were a marvel. They are good and played with ease. It was hard to anticipate their runs each time they had the ball. We would like to have them in our team,” he said.
Mponda, however, doubted if Wizards would pay to sign the two players.
“At Wizards, we don’t believe in buying but rather giving players a platform to showcase their talent and build their career,” he said.
Mzuzu coach, Patrick Kasambara, said they would entertain serious bidders.
“We can’t let go the players for free. We have been with them since the age of 14. We have spent a fortune on them,” he said
