“In any election, there can only be one winner. Time for elections is over. Let us move forward. This is the time to pursue our national goals, time to unite and develop our country,” he said in a brief speech.

Mutharika, who was elected alongside his running mate Everton Chimulirenji, hailed Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) for managing what he called free, fair and transparent elections.

“Today, I want to say thank you Malawi for re-electing me. This is victory for rule of law; victory for the democracy. These are elections which international observers said were peaceful, fair and credible. The elections are a matter of national pride because, for the first time, they were funded using local resources,” he said.

There was blue all over the stadium as Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) supporters flooded the arena to cheer Mutharika as he took the oath of office.

When Mutharika said “so help me God” the stadium erupted into, singing and dancing to pro- DPP songs.

Mutharika retained the country’s presidency after collecting 1,940,709 votes, representing 38.57 percent followed by Lazarus Chakwera of Malawi Congress Party who got 1,781,740, representing 35.41 percent.

Saulos Chilima of UTM was third in the presidential race after getting 1,018, 369 votes or 20.24 percent of the votes cast.

Announcing results of the elections on Monday, Mec Chairperson, Justice Jane Ansah, said the commission had reviewed all the complaints it received before it made the declaration.

“To everyone out there, I wish to say that what binds us together as Malawians is much stronger than what separates us into political parties,” he said.
