Peter Mutharika drums support for DPP candidate
President Peter Mutharika and other senior Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) officials have told people of Lilongwe Msozi North Constituency to vote for the party’s candidate in next Tuesday’s by-election.
Mutharika Wednesday outlined various development plans for the area but kept on attaching conditions to his promises.
Speaking when he campaigned for DPP candidate for the area, Bruno Daka, Mutharika said his development plans for the area can only materialise if Daka becomes a Member of Parliament (MP).
He said he has solutions to education, water, security, electricity and road network challenges that people in the area are experiencing.
“But for all that to happen, you should vote for a DPP candidate on Tuesday,” Mutharika said.
He, however, insisted his development promises were not political.
Earlier, DPP secretary general Greselder Jeffrey, an MP for Nkhotakota South, also said DPP MPs share development projects among themselves before taking what she called ‘bones’ to Parliament.
Taking past elections into account, Lilongwe Msozi North is considered the main opposition Malawi Congress Party’s (MCP) stronghold.
The President also accused opposition parties of creating the by-election and 2019 rigging stories against the DPP.
“They know they will lose. They are fearful,” he said.
Turning to national development, Mutharika said he dreams of no mud and grass-thatched house in the country in 10 to 15 years’ time.
The race for th Parliamentary seat in Lilongwe Msozi North Constituency is between DPP’s Daka and MCP’s Sosten Gwengwe.
