Peter Mutharika gets boxing belt

He is not a boxing champion, but yesterday President Peter Muntharika joined an exclusive club of individuals to receive an honorary belt from World Boxing Council (WBC) at a ceremony held at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe.

In receiving the belt ahead of the WBC convention, which Malawi hosts in Lilongwe this week, Mutharika becomes the first Malawian president to receive the honorary belt and the second in Africa after former South African president, late Nelson Mandela.

Mutharika, who received the belt from WBC Vice-President, Houcine Houichi, also joins Mario Kreutzberger, Mario Moreno, Sylvester Stallone and Denzel Washington as some of the non-boxers to have received similar recognition.

“I feel greatly honoured by the gesture shown by WBC, Africa Boxing Union (ABU) and Malawi Professional Boxing Control Board (MPBCB) to give me an honorary belt,” Mutharika said upon receiving the belt which was incorrectly inscribed Bingu wa Mutharika.

“I will try as much as possible to make sure that my government is giving support to all sporting codes. My Government will give necessary support to amateur boxing so that Malawi develops more boxers that will graduate into professional boxers. I want Malawi to have more boxers of the Isaac Chilemba’s calibre.”

On a lighter note, Mutharika said he deserved the honorary belt. “I have no doubt that WBC President Mr Mauricio Sulaiman will organise a boxing bout where I will fight the world champion Dentay Wilder, popularly known as the Bronze Bomber, in the Super Heavy-weight category.”

Houichi, who is also ABU President, said it was pleasing that Malawi accepted to host the ABU convention, which will help to promote boxing in Africa.

MPBCB, Chairperson, Lonzoe Zimba, said Malawi was ready to host the boxing convention from today to Saturday during which there will also be ABU title bouts. The main bout involves Malawian Limbani Masamba and Congolese Mbiya Mkaku.
