Peter Mutharika to elevate T/A Ngolongoliwa

Publicity Chairperson of Ngolongoliwa Chieftaincy elevation ceremony, Dickson Makumba, says the Mulhako wa Alhomwe grouping is pleased with President Peter Mutharika’s decision to elevate Ngolongoliwa from Traditional Authority (TA) to Senior Chief.

Makumba said since the death of Paramount Chief Mkumba of Phalombe a few years ago, the Lhomwe chiefs have not had any senior chief.

He could not openly say whether the elevation of T/A Ngolongoliwa is a ploy to turn the chieftaincy to paramount chief saying that process is the privilege bestowed upon the President.

The function to elevate Ngolongoliwa to Senior Chief will take place on February 20, 2016 at Thyolo Community Ground.

The Publicity Chairperson said during the function, people in attendance will enjoy traditional dishes and will be treated to traditional dances.

The roots of Chief Ngolongoliwa date back to 1874 with Gunda Ngolongoliwa as the first chief exercising his duties then as village head.

After his death, Gunda was succeeded by Jumbe who later was succeeded by Grivezi Ngolongoliwa who ruled until 1981.

According to Makumba, when Grivezi died he was succeeded by Layton Juma, the current Traditional Authority Ngolongoliwa.

In 1987 the former president, Hastings Kamuzu Banda elevated the chieftaincy to Group Village Head. In 2010, the Chief became Sub Traditional Authority Ngolongoliwa under the late Bingu wa Mutharika’s administration and in 2014, Joyce Banda elevated the chieftaincy to full T/A.
