Peter Mutharika visits John Tembo
President Peter Mutharika Wednesday paid a surprise visit to former Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president, John Tembo, at his home in Area 10 in Lilongwe.
This was immediately after the launch of the National Peace Policy held at Bingu International Convention Centre.
Speaking after a two-hour conversation with the former leader of the opposition, Mutharika said the visit was a show of respect he has for Tembo.
“I have known him for a long time and he was one of my teachers at Dedza Secondary School. We worked together during our independence [struggle] and later on in politics. So, I have great respect for him. We talk once in a while and today I thought I should stop by and say hello. We had a wonderful conversation,” he said
The retired politician and longest serving leader of opposition in Parliament appeared to walk with difficulties.
The 85-year-old retired from active politics in 2013.
