President Peter Mutharika has, in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief of Malawi Defence Force (MDF), appointed Peter Namathanga as the new MDF Commander replacing Vincent Nundwe with effect from Tuesday.
MDF spokesperson Paul Chiphwanya last evening confirmed that Nundwe and his then deputy Clement Namangale will be assigned other duties in the public service.
“The President has the powers to make the changes. They have been made but I cannot know the next assignment for General Nundwe since the decisions are made at the State House,” he said.
Following the appointments, Major General Davis Mtachi has been appointed Deputy Commander and has been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-General. A statement on Malawi Broadcasting Corporation Facebook page quoted communication from the Office of President and Cabinet as saying the appointments are with immediate effect.
The reshuffle has also see Brigadier General Elias Mpaso appointed Army Commander (Land Forces) following his promotion to the rank of Major General whereas Brigadier Francis Kakhuta-Banda remains Maritime Force Commander but has been promoted to the rank of Major General.
Brigadier General Ian Chirwa has been appointed Air Force Commander, having been promoted to the rank of Major General whereas Colonel Harrison Kandula is the Air Force Deputy Commander now that he is a Brigadier General.
In other appointments, Colonel Desmond Chawanda has been appointed Deputy Army Commander (Land Forces) whereas Colonel Richard Chagonapanja remains Deputy Maritime Force Commander but has been promoted to the rank of Brigadier General.
