Peter Wadabwa wonder brace sinks Silver

The 2018 TNM Super League kicked off in style Saturday as defending champions Be Forward Wanderers started the journey with a 2-1 victory over Silver Strikers at Silver Stadium in Lilongwe.

The Nomads came from a goal down to claim maximum points in the first game of the season. Veteran striker, Peter Wadabwa, hammered a second half brace to ensure maximum points after Mphatso Philimon had given Silver the lead in the 20th minute.

Philimon headed in from close range after his earlier attempt had hit the crossbar. Silver had chances to bury the game but Philimon was guilty of several misses.

The two teams went for recess with Silver maintaining the lead.

The Nomads were a changed side in the second half as they looked for an early equaliser but Mike Robert cleared off the line Essau Kanyenda’s goal-bound shot.

A few minutes later, Wadabwa netted a beauty to level the scores. He controlled the ball on the edge of the box before curling in a shot that gave Munthali no chance.

The goal energised Wanderers as they fought hard pressing for the winner. It finally came from Wadabwa again who headed in a Peter Cholopi cross to send Nomads fans into wild celebrations.

Both sides had some chances towards the end but Wanderers held on to claim maximum points.

The Nomads finished the game with 10 men after Enerst Tambe was given marching orders for a second bookable offence towards the end of the game.

This was Wanderers’ first victory against Silver in five games.

Silver Team Manager, Francis Songo, said the rain-soaked pitch affected their style of play.

“It would have been a different game had it not been for the rain-soaked pitch. The game was ours in the first half but we failed to finish off Wanderers after we missed some chances,” Songo said.

Be Forward Wanderers Coach Yasin Osman said it was good to start the season with a win as they aim at successfully defending the title.

“This victory is the beginning of good things for us after a disastrous Charity Shield. I thank the players for working hard throughout,” Osman said.

Before the game kicked off, TNM paraded the trophy in the streets of Lilongwe and several activities were lined up at the stadium to spice up the match.

In other games played yesterday, Nchalo United claimed a 1-0 victory over Mzuni FC whereas Red Lions beat Dwangwa United 2-0.
