Petro to star in Uefa Champions League

Malawi national football team defender Charles Petro will be the second Malawian to play in the UEFA Champions League as his Moldovan side Sheriff Tiraspol takes on Russian team CS Fola Esch in a qualifier today.

The former Nyasa Big Bullets centre back comes after former Flames striker Esau Kanyenda who played in the competition while playing for Rostov in Russia.

Petro said he was longing for the match to underline his potential to scouts.

“I have never played in a big tournament like this one but I am ready for the challenge. These are knock out games and we need to do everything to win it. The team has a history of reaching the group stages of this competition and we want to do the same,” he said.

A local soccer analyst Kevin Moyo said Petro was fortunate to play in a big tournament like Uefa Champions League where big clubs to scout budding talent.

“If I am not wrong Petro will be the second Malawian to play in champions league. Although these are qualifying games but they have huge impact. Petro must realise that this is only opportunity he has,” he said.

Petro joined Sheriff in February from Bullets for an undisclosed fee.
