The Petroleum Importers Limited (PIL), in conjunction with the International Haulage Brokers (IHB), have equipped over 40 fuel tanker drivers in the Northern Region with road safety skills.

PIL Quality Heath Safety Security and Environmental Manager, Constance Msungeni, said training was designed to train the drivers on how to prevent accidents and how to take care of their lives as they drive the fuel tankers.

“When trucks are involved in accidents, lives are affected, product is lost, public is at risk and the environment is destroyed,” Msungeni said.

Among others, the tanker drivers were enlightened on fuel, labels and chemical regulations, among others.

“Driver’s errors contribute to 75 percent of all tanker accidents, so during these trainings, drivers have been trained to prepare in advance for the trip by checking tyres, oil, brake pads and to avoid over speeding.

“Drivers must always be alert as to what is happening on the road,” he said

One of participants, George Moyo, thanked PIL for the training, saying it will go a long way in reducing accidents

“The training is very helpful as it has equipped us with skills on how to prevent accidents,” Moyo said.

The first satiety training was conducted in Blantyre and over 100 drivers attended.
