Paul -and- Mike national chess defending champion, Petros “Razorblade” Mfune, has taken an early lead in his quest for the title-defence.

Mfune is now leading 2.5-1.5 after overcoming former champion Chiletso Chipanga at Crossroads Hotel in Lilongwe over the weekend.

The two chess gurus will play in a 12-duel as they wrestle for the title, which is sponsored to the tune of K600, 000.

According to Chess Association of Malawi (Chessam) officials, Mfune took too many risks to be the first to score on Saturday.

In game two, Chipanga quickly retaliated to level at 1-1, and in the process disturbing Mfune and his home fans.

When the games resumed on Sunday, Mfune made sure he scored first again to put it at 2-1. But in the second game, Chipanga’s overwhelming attack failed to crack through Mfune’s solid defence to only achieve a vital away draw, putting the score at 2.5 to 1.5.

Mfune said he was convinced his opponent was there to frustrate his plans.

“I will step up my preparations, my opponent is determined to overthrow me,” he said.

Chipanga said he would make sure he gives Mfune a good beating next weekend at his Zomba fortress, adding ““I will make him blunt in Zomba.”
