Silver Strikers forward Maxwell Gasten Phodo has enhanced his chances of winning the TNM Super League golden boot award this season.
The forward continues to hog the limelight having netted a brace as Silver laboured to a 3-2 victory over Mafco at Silver Stadium on the opening day of the second round on Saturday.
Phodo has scored 12 goals this season whereas his closest challenger, teammate Stain Davie, has eight goals.
It seems it will be an interesting golden boot race this season as Davie is also a consistent goal scorer, having reached double figures for the past three seasons.
If Phodo wins the Golden boot award this season, it will mean Silver have produced winners for two consecutive seasons after Khuda Muyaba won it with 21 goals in 2019.
Muyaba, who is with Glad Africa Championship side Polokwane City in South Africa, became the first player to score more than 20 goals in domestic football after a decade.
Meanwhile, the golden boot award race is still wide open as four players namely Henderson Misinde (Ntopwa), Muhammad Sulumba (Civil Service United) and Clever Kayira have six goals each.
Patrick Macheso (Silver), Zicco Nkanda (Nyasa Big Bullets) and Chiletso Zoya (TN Stars) have each netted five goals.
Football consultant Kelvin Moyo believes Phodo has better chances of winning the golden boot race.
“His scoring rate is impressive. He has the potential to score more than 20 goals in a season,” Moyo said.
The former Mzuzu Warriors striker is the only player who has scored two hat-tricks this season.
Sports journalist Frank Kandu also hailed the Silver forward.
“Chances are high because of his consistency in scoring goals,” he said.
