Phyzix gets down to work

Rapper Phyzix has hit the ground running as Musicians Union of Malawi (Mum) Southern Chapter Chairperson.
The musician had a first preliminary meeting with his committee held at Jacaranda Cultural Centre (JCC) in Blantyre recently to map the way forward.
“It was a fruitful meeting aimed at getting introduced to each other as a committee and then align tasks and strategies,” Phyzix said.
Some of the highlights of the meeting included looking into having affordable medical and funeral cover for musicians as well creating a welfare fund.
The chairperson, who has taken over from gospel star Ethel Kamwendo Banda, who is now the chapter’s women’s chair, also said they would be engaging in an awareness campaign to attract more artists to join the union.
“Growing membership is another important aspect, where we need to create value for budding musicians; we need to create value for both established and active musicians and we need to create value for all musicians in the Southern Region,” he said.
Phyzix said they also need capacity building and, as such, they would be holding workshops.
“We need to be knowledgeable on issues of technology if we are to be at par with the world and, so, workshops are necessary. We need to look at ways of making money through platforms such as YouTube and even look at social media usage,” he said.
And on Tuesday, Phyzix and his committee were engaged in handovers with the previous committee.
Last month, Mum held chapter elections in the South, Central, Eastern and Johannesburg in South Africa.
Phyzix leads the Southern Chapter deputised by Favoured Martha. The other members of the committee are Dennis Kalimbe of Ndirande Anglican Voices (secretary), Linda Jimu (vice secretary) and Piksy (treasurer).
In the Eastern Chapter, the chairperson is Thom Damba with Gogo Zombolera as vice whereas the Central Chapter’s chairperson is Honarata Pandakwawo, who is deputised by Brenda Onsewa.
The Northern Chapter is being led by Maggie Msowoya as chairperson whereas her vice is Henzie Mo.
The Johannesburg Chapter has Jafali Usi as the chairperson whereas his deputy is James Kondowe.
