PIL donates K5 million medical items to QECH
Petroleum Importers Limited (PIL), the major fuel importer for Malawi, has donated medical equipment worth K5 million to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH).
The donated items included patient monitor equipment, hospital screens, blood sugar monitors, drug trolleys and others and will be distributed to the emergency and trauma centre, labour and delivery ward, cardiac centre and the cancer ward.
PIL says the donation was in response to a request made by the hospital to the company.
Speaking dur ing the handover ceremony of the equipment on Monday, PIL board chairman Zubeir Bhana said the health sector is a key focus area of the company’s corporate Social responsibility programme.
“When we were approached by QECH for assistance, we felt duty bound to help. But we are also in the festive season when road accidents increase. Illnesses also increase with the onset of the rainy season,” Bhana said.
He said apart from assisting patients, PIL also believes that the equipment will assist medical staff at the hospital to work better.
Receiving the equipment, QECH chief nursing officer, Lucy Chigwenembe, said the equipment will go a long way in improving service delivery at the hospital.
