Lilongwe First Grade Magistrate Court has slapped a fan with an K80,000 fine for invading the pitch during Malawi National Football Team’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Ethiopia at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe on Sunday.

The fan, Thomas Kachimera, was found guilty of conduct likely to cause breach of peace after storming onto the pitch towards the end of the match before security personnel apprehended him.

Kachimera, 24, travelled all the way from his Mgungu Village, Traditional Authority Chilowoko, in Ntchisi District to watch the match.

Lingadzi Police Public Relations Officer Salome Zgambo said Kachimera said he wanted to pose for a picture with Flames striker Gabadinho Mhango.

The incident forced a brief stoppage of the match with just a few minutes to full time.

Malawi won the match courtesy of Mhango’s brace whereas Ethiopia pulled one back through Nasir Ahmed.

All the three goals came from the penalty spot.
