Platinum Stars bank on Robert Ng’ambi

Experienced midfielder, Robert Ng’ambi, has seen it all in the often cruel jungle of international football, little wonder the Malawian’s South African Absa Premier Soccer League (PSL) club, Platinum Stars, are banking on him.

Stars are preparing for participation in the 2017 Confederation of African Football (Caf) Confederations Cup, hence Coach Cavin Johnson is counting on his experienced charges, including Vuyo Mere‚ Ndumiso Mabena‚ Tinstwalo Tshabalala and Solomon Mathe.

“If we don’t get what we are looking for on the transfer market‚ I will still be content with having a number of players like Vuyo Mere and Ng’ambi‚ who have experienced the tough conditions or travelling and playing on the continent‚” Johnson told Sowetan newspaper edition of Saturday.

Ng’ambi has vast experience for country and club having been part of Nyasa Big Bullets’ dream team that reached the 2004 Caf Champions League group stages.

The South Africa side begin their campaign against Mozambicans, União Desportiva do Songo, on the weekend of February 10.

Johnson said their opponents, whose regulars include Malawians— goalkeeper Charles Swini and midfielder Frank Banda—could be tricky.

“We are going to Africa which is not easy if you don’t have the right type of players in the squad‚“ said Johnson, whose squad includes Flames’ midfielder, Gerald Phiri Junior.

“You have to know exactly what you are doing. You have to give young players a chance to play at that level‚ but at the same time you must be careful and avoid being embarrassed.”

Stars General Manager, Senzo Mazingisa, said the club will buy quality players within the team’s limited budget.

“We cannot act like we have got big budgets and it is for that reason we promoted youngsters who were ready to be promoted‚“ Mazingisa told Sowetan.

“We had to tighten our budget because the economic environment is clearly not favouring us. I know we are not alone in that boat‚ anything we do we have to be cognizant of the budget.”
