Platinum Stars Coach reveals pushing Phiri Junior
South Africa’s Platinum Stars Coach, Cavin Johnson, has revealed asking Flames attacking midfielder, Gerald Phiri Junior, to change his approach to taking freekicks.
The revelation comes in the wake of Phiri Junior’s sterling performance when he scored two goals from freekicks in the team’s 3-0 win of a Premier Soccer League (PSL) game against Bloemfontein Celtic on Saturday.
Johnson told Kickoff.com that he asked Phiri Junior to aim at scoring other than floating the ball for teammates.
“Phiri has been working hard at training, practising freekicks. In other matches, he has been floating them and I told him, just put the ball in the net. He hit the free-kicks and they both went in. Well done to him,” Johnson was quoted as saying.
The Stars’ mentor praised Phiri Junior for his outstanding performance that helped Stars snap a five-game winless league run.
Stars also featured veteran Flames midfielder Robert Ng’ambi in Saturday’s match, which involved other Malawians, Celtic’s co-Coach, John Maduka and striker Atusaye Nyondo.
