Parents of Disabled Children Association of Malawi (Podcam), has asked the government to train more special needs teachers to help educate children with disabilities
Podcam Director, Miriam Namanja, said shortage of well-trained special needs teachers is negatively affecting the welfare of children with disabilities.
Namanja was speaking during a Christmas party the association organised for children with disabilities and their parents.
She said the organisation, with funding from World Bank, has been conducting sensitisation campaigns in Salima, Mchinji and Lilongwe, teaching parents of children with disabilities how to treat their children.
Namanja said the parents understand the importance of sending their children to school, adding that communities across the country are helping in construction of disability friendly buildings to help learners with disabilities.
“It’s not time to seat down and cry for having a disabled child, but it’s time to rise up and send these children to school and also take good care of them,” Namanja said when celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ with the parents and children.
Podcam has a total of 16,243 beneficiaries across the country.
