Poetry at night

Somehow, poetry gives one the picture of a genre that is less energy intensive to keep one awake all night.

But, in a move that defies habit, poets in Blantyre have organised the first ever ‘M’bindikiro wa Alakatuli’ in a typical imitation of night of prayer.

In this case, poets and those who love poems have been called to an all-night poetry feast scheduled for today, February 24, at Mibawa Multi- Purpose Hall in Blantyre. It has been organised in conjunction with Mibawa.

One of the organisers, Mollen Nazombe, says the show is the first of its kind in recent memory.

“This is the first time for a poetry show like this to be held at night. The show, which will start at 07: 30 pm, will attract poets such as Joseph Madzedze, Raphael Sitima, Sylvester Kalizang’oma, Kenneth Khondiwa and Mollen Nazombe,” Nazombe said.

In addition, comedians such as Ching’aning’ani and musician Giddes Chalamanda will be on call.

“The good thing about the show is that people can come with family members such as children. Actually, children will pay half the price. The show will go like any other day-time show. Just that, this time, we want to treat poetry lovers to a special dish of poetry. They will also get to know the poets they love better.

“Again, we want to give a chance to those who have no time to attend day-time shows. We know that there are people out there who crave a chance to attend a poetry show but, due to commitments during the day, they are unable to do so,” Nazombe said.
